This would probably work if you got something spectacular that people want. For instance, if you know how to make money and have real proof. Anyway, who has tried to set aside premium areas? What plugins did you use? What were some challenges?

I have not yet considered a premium section, maybe will do in future, when we have a lot of activity.
There are plenty of things people can offer for premium subscription, like, Premium services, tools, products, Usergroup upgrades, permission upgrades, user badges, awards, ad removal and much more.
I think, if you are using MyBB, "MySubscriptions" is one of the best plugins I have seen. I think Xenforo has a built in feature for this.

Xenforo have been the best when it comes to forum software in my opinion but when if you're looking for the software with best plugins, it's going to be WordPress.

The whole situation is similar to that with a classifieds and basically, you got a have a lot of traffic. You gotta be a hub for the subject you're in.
