I have used only MyBB till now. Haven't had any requirement or need to move to paid software. However if I have to upgrade to paid software I would choose Xenforo. It's affordable and feature packed!

I have used all the free types minus WordPress and have used XenForo. As of now, I use XenForo and phpBB.

Anyhow, I think all forum software is awesome. It just depends what sacrifices you want to make. For instance, free stuff is generally more DIY (Do-it-Yourself).

Xenforo and WordPress is my favourite forum softwares. WordPress is best for blogs though but it can be used for forums too. I'm using Xenforo for my Sports and Workout Niche forum now.
